Our Story: From Love to Light

Welcome to our Wednesday blog! I, Olivia, have written up a real treat for you. Today, I will be sharing the tale of how my solar energy company came to be. It's a story of love, innovation, and progress that we're excited to share with you. In a world increasingly dependent on sustainable solutions, we, as a solar energy company, are proud to be at the forefront of the renewable energy revolution. But our journey began with a deeply personal motivation that has driven us to new heights - the desire to care for a loved one while making a positive impact on the environment.

The foundation of our solar energy venture was laid upon a strong bond between me and my grandfather. He was not just an ordinary grandfather; he was my best friend, mentor, and confidant. We shared an undescribable special connection that transcended our generational gap - a connection fueled by mutual admiration and adoration. Let me tell you a little bit about my grandpa. I lovingly called him “Oompie,” which was just gibberish my older sister and I came up with as children. It was one of those things that always stuck. Oompie was an immigrant from Ecuador. He journeyed to America as a young man, in search of a better life. He would often tell me stories of how he’d never forgotten his first steps on the American roads. He was shocked at how even, neat, and pleasant the pavement felt. He hadn’t seen anything like it at that point in his life. He ended up getting a job at a restaurant and would sleep on the floors since he didn’t have a home yet. He taught himself 8 languages, often by candlelight at night, since he worked all day. Fun fact: He even taught himself how to sing opera music - boy, was he good!

Not long into this new American life, he felt indebted to the country for giving him a better life. He decided to enlist in the US Army for the Vietnam War. He served in the military in several roles but enjoyed working in aviation best. During his time overseas he met my grandmother, who we lovingly call “Oomie.” Another fun fact: Oomie worked in the Mess Hall in Vietnam during the war and had a crush on my grandpa. She caught his attention by sneaking him an extra scoop of ice cream. And the rest is history!

As my grandpa grew older, he faced health challenges. Several stemmed from bodily trauma from being in the Vietnam War. When I was 15, Oompie had his first stroke. Seeing the grandfather that I revered to be omniscient, powerful, strong, courageous, and invincible half-paralyzed after the stroke shook me to my core. I made an unwavering commitment to be by his side, offering the comfort and care he deserved. I expected this to be a challenge - learning about his needs and developing an intuition of being able to tell what he needed just by looking at the expression on his face was quite the process. I knew it would be difficult to have a “normal” social life, perform well academically, and take care of him. But, I was more than willing to do it.

Since then, my grandfather endured other health conditions, like another stroke, which prompted me to spend my sweet 16 in the hospital by his bedside. He experienced kidney failure, dialysis, and many other ailments. My commitment to taking care of him persisted throughout my college years. Juggling college as a Computer Science major at Georgia Tech, establishing leadership roles in 8 student organizations, working 3 full-time jobs to cover the cost of my education that scholarships did not cost, and coming home to care for my grandfather was a difficult task. But, it was my proudest accomplishment. I ended up graduating with High Honors, with my grandfather cheering me on in the audience!

After college, my commitment presented a new challenge - finding a way to support my family without compromising my grandfather's well-being.

In the quest to create a work-life balance that allowed me to care for my grandfather while fulfilling my passion for sustainability, I found solace in the sun itself. The sun, a celestial body that has sustained life on Earth for billions of years, represented the perfect embodiment of energy, resilience, and continuity. Thus, the seeds of my solar energy company were sown. I was able to grow my company by my grandfather’s side, and we celebrated every small milestone until he passed away in March 2022.

From humble beginnings, my company has continued to thrive, focusing on customer satisfaction, empowering different communities to join the solar industry, innovation, and progress. Our dedicated team of experts has been relentless in advancing solar solutions, pushing the boundaries of efficiency, and optimizing systems to bring affordable solar solutions to homes and businesses alike.
